Jailed Burmese Opposition Leader Gets 30 Minutes of Freedom

Burmese opposition party members and relatives of jailed deputy opposition leader Tin Oo say his house arrest was lifted for 30 minutes this week to allow him to pay respects to his deceased nephew.

Relatives say the 78 year old Tin Oo was not, however, allowed to attend the funeral of the nephew Thursday.

Tin Oo is the vice chairman of the opposition National League for Democracy. He was arrested along with party leader Aung San Suu Kyi in 2003.

He was originally held in Kale prison, about 700 kilometers north of the capital, Rangoon. He was later transferred to his home in the capital where he remains under house arrest.
