Malaysian FM Says He Hopes to Visit Burma This Week

Malaysian Foreign Minister Hamid Albar says he hopes to travel to Burma this week to check on the country's democratic reforms.

Hamid said Tuesday that he expects to travel to Burma this week, but has not yet booked a flight.

Earlier, the foreign minister said he will meet with any officials or groups the military government of Burma allows him to see during his expected trip there.

There has been no indication from Burma's military government that he will be allowed to meet detained pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations appointed Hamid last year as a special envoy to visit Burma.

Officials in Burma agreed to the visit and a January date was set, but then it was postponed by Rangoon.
