ASEAN Foreign Ministers to Discuss Burma at Annual Retreat

Foreign ministers from the Association of South East Asian Nations are expected to discuss the situation in Burma during their annual retreat this week.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar is scheduled to brief officials about his trip to Burma last month.

The ministers meet Wednesday and Thursday in Bali.

The 10 ASEAN member countries appointed Syed Hamid as a special envoy to Burma to evaluate its democratization process.

He was barred from meeting with Burmese pro-democracy activists, including detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi, during his three-day visit.

Syed Hamid said he did not see any major political reforms while he was there.
