Germany Donates Funds to Fight AIDS in Burma

The United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, says Germany has donated 870,000 dollars to help fund an HIV-AIDS prevention program in Burma.

In a statement issued today, UNICEF officials say the German donation will help non-governmental organizations in Burma teach HIV-AIDS prevention skills to children between the ages of 10 and 17.

They say the program will operate in 20 townships where HIV-AIDS is prevalent, and where many youths are not attending school and have little access to education about the disease.

UNICEF says there are about 330,000 people living with HIV-AIDS in Burma and more than one percent of them are between the ages of 15 and 49.
