Burma Rights Group Questions UN Official's Comments

A Burma rights group says it is concerned about comments made by UN Under-Secretary General Ibrahim Gambari following his recent visit to Burma.

The Britain-based Burma Campaign said today that Gambari's comment that Burma's government may be entering a new chapter in democracy reform, is not accurate.

The organization said, during Gambari's visit, Burmese officials delivered the same speech about their commitment to change - with empty promises.

The Burma Campaign cautioned that if Burma's detained opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, is released soon, it should not be interpreted as a sign of change on the part of the regime.

While in Burma, Gambari was able to meet with the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, her first visit from a senior UN official in more than two years. She has spent 10 of the past 16 years in detention, mostly under house arrest.

Burma's military leadership refused to recognize election results after a landslide victory by the pro-democracy party in 1990.
