Burma Releases Opposition Protester

The Burmese government has released an opposition demonstrator who was detained earlier this week after he held a lone protest to mark the birthday of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The family of school teacher Tun Tun says he was released late Tuesday. He was arrested Monday he shouted slogans in central Rangoon.

The 44 year old protester says he was forced to sign a statement agreeing not to participate in any more anti-government activities. But Tun Tun tells VOA he plans to "continue to expose the sufferings of the people."

Burma's military government has held Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest for most of the past 16 years. The government recently extended her confinement order until mid-2007, saying she remains a threat to the state.
