Burma Destroys Seized Drugs Worth Millions

Burma has burned more than a ton of narcotics worth some 148 million dollars.

Drug enforcement officials say 690 kilograms of opium and millions of amphetamine tablets were part of the haul destroyed Monday in Rangoon.

Officials say that is just a fraction of the drug trade slipping across Burma's borders. Burma is the world's second largest producer of opium, after Afghanistan.

The country's police chief, Major General Khin Yi, said Burma is making gains against the drug trade. He said opium production has been cut in half over the past four years.
