Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Postpones Trip to Burma

Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo has indefinitely postponed a trip to Burma that was scheduled to begin Wednesday.

Romulo said the postponement happened because he and Burmese authorities could not agree on the date. Romulo asked to visit detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi while on the trip, but has not received a reply.

The Philippines is scheduled to assume the rotating chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations later this month.

Meanwhile, Burma's state media said Tuesday that releasing Aung San Suu Kyi would endanger the nation and herself.

The commentary also said pressure from the United States and other countries to release her from house arrest would not work.

Aung San Suu Kyi has spent much of the past 17 years in some form of detention. In May, her current sentence of house arrest was extended for another year.
