Burmese and Thai Generals Discuss Military Cooperation

Burma's senior ruling general, Than Shwe, has met with the head of Thailand's armed forces in Burma's new administrative capital.

Burma's official media New Light of Myanmar says Than Shwe and Thai Armed Forces Supreme Commander General Ruengroj Mahasaranond conferred Tuesday in Naypyidaw. Several top Burmese military officials also attended the meeting.

The Thai military chief's three-day visit to Burma comes a week after Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and several cabinet members made a brief, unannounced trip to Burma for talks with Than Shwe. After his trip, Mr. Thaksin said
Thailand and Burma were planning more talks on military cooperation.

This week's discussions are expected to include improving cross-border relations among officials, battling drug smuggling, and border demarcation.

Than Shwe is the chairman of Burma's military government, known as the State Peace and Development Council.
