Burma Refuses Resumption of Red Cross Visits to Prisons

The International Committee of the Red Cross says Burma's military government is refusing to allow it to resume visits to prisons and labor camps.

Red Cross access to the nation's prisons was cut off in December last year.

The Red Cross representative to Burma, Patrick Vial, held discussions this week with the country's interior minister, Major General Maung Oo.

A Red Cross spokeswoman says no mention was made of resuming the prison visits. She says the organization is very concerned about conditions in Burma's jails.

Burma has been ruled by military juntas since 1962, and now holds about 11-hundred political prisoners.
