Burma Says UN Resolution Would Destabilize Country

Burma's military government says a proposed UN security council resolution criticizing Burma would be a threat to peace in the nation.

Speaking to reporters today in Naypyidaw, Burma Ploice Chief Major General Khin Yi said the situation in Burma was not a matter for Security Council consideration. He said such a resolution would amount to interference in the country's internal affairs.

On Monday, U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said he would propose a UN resolution condemning Burma's military government, saying its oppression and other human rights abuses represent a threat to regional security.

Khin Yi told reporters that, in making the accusations, the United States is turning a blind eye to the Burmese government's many successes.

The UN General Assembly committee passed a resolution last week that says Burma's government has refused to investigate widespread human rights violations.
