Thai Police Intercept Truck Load of Burmese Laborers

Police in Thailand say they have intercepted a truck carrying at least 41 illegal immigrant laborers being smuggled into the country from Burma.

The officials say they stopped a truck in the Mae Sod district of Tak Province and discovered the laborers in the vehicle's cargo container. The truck's driver admitted to police he intended to deliver the workers to various provinces in Thailand.

Thai police say they are intensifying efforts to crack down on human trafficking in the nation's border areas.

Human rights groups say tens of thousands of Burmese cross the border into Thailand each year to seek economic opportunity and escape Burma's military government and are often exploited by traffickers.
