Burmese Legendary Poet Tin Moe Dies

One of Burma's most well-known poets, Tin Moe, has died.

Family members say he collapsed Monday at a coffee shop in the western U.S. state of California, where he was living in exile. They say he died shortly afterwards. Tin Moe was in his early 70s.

During his literary career, he published more than thirty books and essays and won numerous prizes, including the National Literary Prize in 1965 for his first book, The Lantern.

Tin Moe campaigned for the pro-democracy movement and was jailed in 1991 by Burma's military government. He served a four year sentence and later moved to the United States.

He is also known for writing textbooks and children's books and served as the poetry editor of the Ludu Daily Newspaper.

Tin Moe's poetry is banned in his native country.
