Burma Extends House Arrest of Top Democracy Leader

Burma's government has extended the house arrest of deputy opposition leader Tin Oo by one year.

Tuesday's decision by the Home Affairs Ministry comes despite repeated calls by his party and the international community to release him.

Tin Oo, in his 70s, is the vice chairman of the opposition National League for Democracy.

He was arrested along with party leader Aung San Suu Kyi in 2003.

He was originally held in Kale prison north of the capital, Rangoon, but was later transferred to his home in the capital and placed under house arrest.
