Pro-Democracy Group Demands Release of Burmese Protesters

A pro-democracy activist group in Burma is demanding that authorities release protesters who were arrested after demonstrating for better living conditions in the country.

The group, 88 Generation Students on Monday said the nine protesters arrested Thursday were peaceful and should be allowed to express their sentiments, needs and suffering.

The opposition National League for Democracy has also condemned the arrests.

Protests are rare in military-ruled Burma. The junta has little tolerance for political dissent and strictly curbs freedom of assembly and the media.

Burma's military regime is holding at least 11-hundred political prisoners.

The head of the National League for Democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi, has spent most of the past 17 years under house arrest.

The newly-formed 88 Generation Students is made up of participants of a pro-democracy movement in 1988. Burma's military leaders crushed that movement.
