Witnesses: Burmese PM Returns from Singapore

Witnesses in Burma say the country's ailing prime minister has returned home after spending two months in Singapore for medical treatment.

They say General Soe Win arrived in Rangoon today aboard a commercial flight.

Burmese authorities previously confirmed the prime minister was receiving medical attention in Singapore, but did not said why. Political observers suspect he has leukemia.

Soe Win is the second Burmese leader to be treated in Singapore this year. In January, Senior General Than Shwe, the head of Burma's military government, received medical care there for an undisclosed condition.

The prime minister took office in 2004, replacing Khin Nyunt, who was purged from the military government.

Soe Win is known for his role in the bloody crackdown on democracy protesters in Rangoon in 1988. The United States also has accused him of organizing an attack on the motorcade of Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi near Mandalay in
2003.

She was imprisoned after the attack and placed under house arrest, where she remains today.
