Burma Opposition Calls for UN Probe of Leader's Detention

Burma's main opposition group has called for a United Nations inquiry into the detention of its leader, Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

More than 30 members of the National League for Democracy made the request in a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and U.S. Ambassador to the UN Zalmay Khalilzad.

The letter calls for Aung San Suu Kyi's release and asks the UN to investigate a clash four years ago between backers of the military government and opposition figures. The opposition says about 100 members of the NLD were killed.

Burma's military government accused Aung San Suu Kyi of causing the violence and put her in what it calls "protective custody," where she remains.

The NLD won parliamentary elections in 1990 but the military did not relinquish power. The military has ruled Burma in one form or another since 1962.
