Burmese Mizzima News Named 'Free Media Pioneer 2007'

The International Press Institute has honored the independent news agency, Mizzima, with its 2007 Free Media Pioneer award.

The press institute issued a statement saying Mizzima has continued to provide accurate and timely news and information on Burma despite attempts by Burma's military government to limit the news organization's activities.

Mizzima News was founded in 1998 by a group of journalists in exile. The agency says it aims to promote awareness about the ongoing situation in Burma and promote democracy and freedom of expression in the country by improving the flow of information.

The Vienna-based International Press Institute, which is a global network of editors, media executives and journalists, will present the award during its World Congress in Istanbul, Turkey on May 15th.

The 2006 Free Media Pioneer award went to the Yemen Times daily newspaper.
