Heavy Rains, Floods Kill 5 in Rangoon, Burma

Burmese officials say floods triggered by heavy rains have killed at least five people in the country's largest city, Rangoon.

The storm that began late Thursday has brought the heaviest rainfall in decades. Floods have submerged hundreds of houses, knocked down walls and toppled trees.

Burmese state media say four members of one family suffocated Saturday after inhaling fumes from a fire caused by a short circuit due to flooding in their home. A woman also was electrocuted after stepping on a live power cable brought down by the storm.

Residents of Rangoon blamed the flooding on the city's poor drainage system, which is often choked with garbage at the end of the October-to-May dry season.
