Rights Group Says Burma Detains Two Journalists

A media rights group says Burma's government has arrested two Burmese journalists working for a Japanese television station.

Reporters Without Borders says the two were arrested Monday when they went to a port near the capital, Rangoon, to confirm the arrival of a North Korean ship.

The journalists, U Aung Shwe Oo and his daughter, Daw Sint Sint Aung, are both employed by the Japanese station Nippon News Network and work in the agency's Bangkok bureau.

Reporters Without Borders says the arrests are a violation of international rules that protect correspondents. It called on Japan's government to do all it can to ensure the Burmese journalists are freed.

The group says at least five journalists are imprisoned in Burma, including U Win Tin, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence.
