UN Adviser on Burma Meets With Chinese Officials

The United Nations' Special Adviser on Burma, Ibrahim Gambari, has met with senior Chinese government officials in Beijing as part of wider regional discussions on Burma.

UN spokesperson Marie Okabe said Monday that efforts to promote positive change in Burma will require direct dialogue with all interested countries.

Gambari is scheduled to travel next to India and Japan for further meetings.

The United Nations appointed Gambari to the adviser post in May to support efforts to restore democracy and protect human rights in Burma.

Last year, Gambari held talks with the Burmese government and met with detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
