India and Burma have reached agreement about India's development of the new Sittwe port in northwest Burma, near its border with India.
Government officials said Wednesday that the agreement was reached after India modified its original offer about when the port would be turned over to Burma.
Originally, India wanted to develop the port and use it for some time before turning it over. Officials in Burma's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said India now will turn the port over immediately after it becomes suitable for larger vessels.
