British Artists Plan to Send Piano to Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi

A group of British women from the performing arts plans to send a piano to Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who remains under house arrest in Rangoon.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is an accomplished pianist who has spent most of the past decade confined to her home. The Britons, led by actress Maureen Lipman, took action after learning her piano broke through heavy use in Burma's tropical climate.

The few visitors allowed to see Daw Aung San Suu Kyi report that she has helped ease the hardship of government detention by playing works of Bach and other composers.

Britain's "The Sunday Times" newspaper says neighbors have also drawn comfort from her recitals, knowing that if they heard music from her compound that Aung San Suu Kyi was still alive.

The newspaper says Lipman and her compatriots are considering accompanying the piano to Rangoon to present it to the activist.
