UN Expert Meets Top Burmese Military Official and Leaders of Ethnic Parties - 2002-10-20

A U-N human rights envoy has held talks with Burma's military intelligence chief Khin Nyunt and leaders of various ethnic minority political parties.

The human rights investigator for Burma, Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, met with the officials (Saturday) to discuss human rights abuse charges against the military government's army.

Mr. Pinheiro is visiting the country for 12 days, and is expected to tour Rangoon's Insein prison and meet with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi before ending his trip (on October 28th).

The human rights envoy is also supposed to investigate charges that rape of Shan women and girls was used a weapon of war and terror, but Mr. Pinheiro will not visit Shan state on this visit.

Burma's ruling junta has repeatedly denied allegations of human rights abuse.
