Burmese Junta Rejects Allegations of Harassment Against Opposition - 2003-01-04

Burma's military junta has denied restricting opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi's political activities.

In a statement today (Saturday), the junta denied restricting any politician's movements, but said local law-enforcement personnel cannot be faulted for carrying out their legitimate responsibilities.

Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi said last week that although a series of trips around the country had gone well, some local officials were obstructive. During her trip last week to western Rakhine state, officials reportedly blocked her vehicle and told people not to attend her rallies.

The United States and Britain have have voiced concern over the allegations.
