Germany and Japan initiated the commercialization of maglev trains since 1970. Maglev technology in the United States lags Germany and Japan. A maglev train project just started in Shanghai, Funan Province of China.

The pilot maglev train project has been conducted in Old Dominion University campus in Norfolk, Virginia. There are two types of maglev technologies - electro magnetic suspension and electro dynamic suspension.

Germans use electro magnetic suspension technology, which has one rail. There is half-inch gap between train and rail, raised by magnetic force.

Japanese use electro dynamic suspension technology, which runs in a ditch with an 8-inch gap between train and rail. This type of technology is suitable for Japanese terrain and its frequent earthquakes. It is estimated that the cost of maglev trains will be around 50 million dollars per mile.
