Burma Increases Gasoline Ration - 2003-01-14

The Burmese military government has increased the allowable ration of gasoline for private cars and taxis.

An official notice posted at gasoline stations, and reported by the Associated Press, says the new rules took effect a week ago.

It says private vehicle owners may purchase 10 extra gallons of fuel each month, at a rate of 65 (U.S.) cents per gallon. That is in addition to their 60-gallon quota at a rate of 17 cents.

Taxis can get 20 extra gallons each month at the higher price, in addition to their 60-gallon quota.

The increased limits were not announced in the official press. Observers say the goal of the new policy is to curb black market gasoline sales and bring down taxi fares.
