EU Extends Sanctions Against Burma - 2003-04-15

The European Union has extended sanctions against Burma for another year.

EU foreign ministers said Monday the sanctions will include an extended list of people subject to a visa bans and a strengthened arms embargo against the country.

They say the decision was based on Burma's failure to agree on a timetable for the return of democracy.

Both the European Union and the United States have imposed economic sanctions on Burma in response to the ruling junta's grip on power.

In recent months, both EU and U.S. officials have threatened to expand the sanctions because of the faltering pace of UN sponsored reconciliation talks with the National Democratic League, which won a landslide election in 1990.
