Burma Holds Drug-Burning Ceremony - 2003-06-26

Burma's military government burned thousands of kilograms of seized drugs today (Thursday) to celebrate the United Nations International Anti-Drug Day.

Officials torched the drugs at a Rangoon ceremony attended by Burmese military leaders and diplomats.

But European Union officials did not attend the ceremony. The French Press Agency reports the European diplomats boycotted the ceremony to protest the continued detention of Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The news agency quoted a Burmese government spokesman as saying the boycott was uncalled for.
