Thailand Arrests 11 Burmese Activists - 2003-06-29

Police in Thailand have detained 11 Burmese activists who planned to demonstrate outside their country's embassy in Bangkok to demand the release of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The nine men and two women were rounded up Thursday at a Bangkok textile factory, after a warning from Burma that they were planning to kidnap the Burmese ambassador and other people to hold in exchange for the democracy leader.

The suspects said they were planning a June 30th demonstration outside the embassy, but denied that they intended to storm the mission or kidnap anyone.

Police said the 11 had entered the country illegally and would be sent to the immigration division.
