UN And Thailand Agree To Move Burmese Exiles To Detention Camps - 2003-07-02

United Nations and Thai officials have agreed to move about 15,00 Burmese political refugees to detention camps along the Thailand-Burma border.

A Thai foreign ministry spokesman says all of the refugees in question live in Bangkok. The time of the move has not been disclosed.

A large number of Burmese have fled across the border to Thailand to escape Rangoon's repressive military government.

The exact number of Burmese refugees in Thailand is unknown. Only a handful have formally applied for refugee status.
