Iraqi Governing Council Member Dies - 2003-09-25

A member of the Iraqi Governing Council who was shot and wounded outside her home last week has died.

The U.S. - led Coalition Provisional Authority says Akila al-Hashimi died today (Thursday) at a U.S. military hospital from serious abdominal wounds.

The U.S. administrator for Iraq, Paul Bremer, issued a statement offering condolences to Ms. al-Hashimi's family and the people of Iraq.

Iraqi officials say Ms. al-Hashimi, one of three women on the 25-member U.S. - appointed council, was shot outside her home last Saturday.

Earlier today, a bomb explosion rocked a Baghdad hotel housing a bureau of a U.S. television network, killing at least one person.

Today's (Thursday's) blast hit the Al Aike hotel, which housed the Baghdad bureau of NBC news. NBC employees in Baghdad report significant damage to the first two floors of the hotel. A hotel worker was killed, while an NBC employee was slightly injured.

Hotel staff say an explosive device was placed a few meters from the hotel and near a generator. Hotel occupants were evacuated and U.S. troops and Iraqi police began patrolling the area.

NBC issued a statement, saying it would continue its coverage of events in Iraq.

Two suspected Iraqi resistance leaders were also arrested in a series of U.S. raids in and around ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's birthplace, Tikrit. Officials say the two are suspected of financing and leading Saddam Hussein's loyalist militia, the Fedayeen.
