Interview With Depayin Incident Eye Witnesses - 2003-10-08

Democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was detained by the military authorities on May 30th. after her a clash between her party members and government supporters at a town of De-pe-yin.

The government said 4 people died and about 48 others injured. But the two eye witnesses who later fled to Thailand disputed the government's claim and gave sworn testimonies to the Thai Senate.

Ko Wunna Maung and U Khin Zaw recently arrived to the United States and testified before House Subcommittee on International Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Human Rights on October 1st.

Interviewed by VOA Burmese Service, both said Democracy leader's motorcade was attacked by the government organized mob armed with wooden sticks and iron rods resulting in the deaths of at least 70 people and scores injured.
