Bush Plans to Discuss Burma with Thai Prime Minister - 2003-10-16

President Bush says he plans to discuss the situation in Burma when he meets with Thailand's Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra next week.

In an interview with the Bangkok Post newspaper, Mr. Bush said the United States remains disappointed with the continued detention of Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. He called the Nobel peace laureate a "heroic woman."

Mr. Bush also said he plans to continue pressing for democracy in Burma, saying the wishes of the Burmese people should be honored.

Aung San Suu Kyi was detained by Burma's military rulers last May. She remains under house arrest after a brief hospitalization.

Mr. Bush told the Post he plans to meet with the Thai prime minister Sunday, ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Bangkok.
