Bush Vows To Stay Course The In Iraq - 2003-10-28

President Bush says the latest acts of violence in Iraq are the work of terrorists who want to kill progress in that country. He spoke after being briefed at the White House by the chief U.S. administrator in Iraq, Paul Bremer.

President Bush says the United States will stay the course in Iraq, despite a series of deadly blasts in Baghdad.

He says terrorists are killing Iraqis in an effort to stop progress, and vows America will not be deterred.

"The more progress we make on the ground, the more free the Iraqis become, the more electricity that is available, the more jobs are available, the more kids that are going to school, the more desperate these killers become," Mr. Bush said.

The president says most Iraqis are opposed to the terrorists, and know they threaten their future.

"The Iraqi people understand that there is a handful of people who do not want them to live in freedom," he said.

The comments followed a new wave of bombings in Baghdad. The deadliest occurred outside a building used by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
