Media Watchdog Groups Voice Outrage Over Death Sentence To Burmese Journalist - 2003-12-03

The media watchdog group Reporters Without Borders is challenging a death sentence Burma has imposed on a sports journalist.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Reporters Without Borders joined the Burma Media Association in demanding proof that the editor of the sports magazine First Eleven, U Zaw Thet Htwe, was involved in a coup attempt in July.

U Zaw Thet Htwe is one of 12 suspects implicated in an alleged plot to assassinate members of Burma's military government. Burmese authorities claimed the suspects were planning to bomb five locations in the capital, Rangoon.

Nine suspects, including U Zaw Thet Htwe, were convicted of treason and sentenced to death during a November 28th court martial at Insein Prison in Rangoon. The fate of the other three suspects is not known.
