Amnesty International Calls On Burmese Military Junta To Take Actions Rather Than Words - 2003-12-28

A leading human rights group urged the ruling Burmese military junta to improve human rights condition.

In a statement released on Monday (22 December, 2003), London-based Amnesty International called on the junta to release all prisoners of conscience and stop arresting people for their peaceful dissent.

The statement was released after returning from AI’s 17-day visit to Burma.

In an interview with VOA Burmese Service, spokesperson of the group Magtha Kowalczuk reiterated the Amnesty’s calls for immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners.

She said Amnesty International welcomed certain improvements made by the military government such as giving political prisoners access to reading and writing. At the same time the group pointed out that the human rights situation has deteriorated significantly since the violent 30th May attack on the National League for Democracy
