Burmese Ethnic Leaders Support SPDC's Road Map For Democracy - 2004-01-01

A published report says several Burmese ethnic leaders have pledged their support for the military government's so-called "road map" to democracy.

Burma's state-run "New Light" newspaper reports leaders from ethnic groups that signed cease-fire agreements with Rangoon, as well as negotiators for several other ethnic groups, joined Burmese Prime Minister Khin Nyunt at a harvesting festival Monday in northern Burma.

The newspaper reports the ethnic leaders agreed to play an active role in making the "road map" work.

Burma's military government says the "road map" is aimed at bringing the country to democracy, and includes the writing of a new constitution and elections.

Several Western governments have expressed doubt that the "road map" will succeed, especially if Aung San Suu Kyi's opposition National League for Democracy party does not participate in the transition.
