Burmese Junta Prepares For Forthcoming National Convention - 2004-05-02

Burma's military government is preparing for a national constitutional convention to be held on May 17th.

The country's official newspaper, The New Light of Myanmar, says top Burmese officials held a working meeting in Hmawby township on Friday to prepare for the convention.

The paper said Attorney-General U Aye Maung explained preparations for the National Convention, while Secretary U Thaung Nyunt reported on regulations for holding the meeting.

State media says preparations are in full swing, with dormitories, gymnasiums, canteens and a hospital being constructed at the venue near the capital, Rangoon.

What is still unclear is whether opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi will be released from house arrest in time to attend the convention with her party, the National League for Democracy.

NLD secretary U Lwin said last week that Burma's junta was showing signs of flexibility ahead of the convention. But he warned that the opposition may not attend unless its leader is released.
