Malaysia: Burma's Talks Should Be Inclusive of All Parties - 2004-06-04

Malaysia says it has told Burma the best way for democracy to develop in Burma is for all parties to be involved in the country's ongoing constitutional convention.

Malaysia's view was put forward during talks in that country Tuesday between Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his Burmese counterpart, Khin Nyunt.

Burma's main opposition party, the National League for Democracy, is boycotting the convention, partly because the country's military government refuses to release Aung San Suu Kyi.

The pro-democracy leader has been under house arrest for the past year.

Burma's military rulers insist the constitutional convention is part of a process that will restore democracy. But western governments and international human rights groups have condemned the government-backed meetings as a sham.
