Indonesia: EU Would Be Blame If Burma Is Not Allowed To Prticiapte In ASEM Summit - 2004-06-30

An Indonesian official says the European Union would be to blame if Burma is not allowed to participate in a summit between Asian and European leaders in October.

Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Marty Natalegawa made that remark in speaking to reporters Monday about Hanoi meeting between the Association of Southeast Asian nations and the European Union.

Indonesia is the current chair of the 10-member ASEAN.

Asian countries have been pushing for Burma to be allowed to attend the meeting, but E.U. officials object because of Burma's poor human rights record.

European leaders insist that Burma's military government release democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been detained for more than a year.
