Indonesia Calls for Burma to Act Following Allegations of Phone Tampering - 2004-07-15

Indonesian foreign ministry officials say Burma must take corrective steps, following suspicions of wiretapping at Indonesia's embassy in Rangoon.

The officials have not said what steps they have requested.

Indonesian officials say technicians on a routine work assignment Monday found that phone lines in the embassy were operating at a lower frequency than normal. The foreign ministry says a low frequency could indicate wire tapping.

Ministry officials summoned Burma's ambassador in Jakarta Tuesday to express concern about the alleged phone tampering.

One Indonesian legislator (Djoko Susilo) says the Burmese government may have wanted to listen to conversations at the embassy to learn more about the position of Indonesia and its Asian allies on the issue of detained opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.
