Burmese Dissident Released from Prison - 2004-07-21

An international media rights group says Burma has released a journalist and political activist from prison.

Reporters Without Borders says U Thar Ban was released from a Rangoon prison last week, four months after his seven-year prison sentence had been completed.

The group says U Thar Ban, who worked for a state-run newspaper for 17 years, was arrested in 1997 on charges of helping a student write articles and a book about the Burmese student movement.

Reporters Without Borders said while it welcomed the release, the group was concerned about the health of at least 10 other journalists being held in Burmese prisons.
