Indonesia: ASEM Should Go On Despite Burma Dispute - 2004-07-28

Indonesia says it believes an upcoming Asia-Europe meeting scheduled for October will take place, despite a dispute over Burma's participation.

Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda says he believes all parties involved want the talks to take place in Vietnam as scheduled.

The European Union says it opposes Burma's presence because of its poor human rights record. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations says Burma should be allowed to participate as an ASEAN member.

ASEAN says it wants all three of its newest members -Burma, Laos and Cambodia -to be part of the Asia-Europe meeting.
