Burma, India Sign Rail Accord - 2004-07-29

India has signed an agreement to help expand Burma's rail network.

Under the agreement, signed Tuesday, India will provide Burma with a $56 million line of credit for improving its railways. India also will supply Rangoon with equipment, machinery, locomotives and other components.

The agreement was signed in New Delhi. Officials say it will help strengthen ties between the two southern Asian neighbors.

Burma now has a 4,500-kilometer-long rail network.
