Floods Threaten Northern Indian State - 2004-08-09

Authorities in northern India's Himachal Pradesh state have evacuated hundreds of people from several villages that could be submerged, if a lake in neighboring Tibet overflows.

Indian officials say they have been warned by China that water from the rain-swollen lake could cause flash floods.

In another development, relief teams Monday rescued 20 construction workers in Himachal Pradesh who had been trapped in a tunnel for nearly 24 hours after mudslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains.

Meanwhile in Bangladesh, the death toll from the worst flooding to hit that country in six years has risen to 691. Flood waters continued to recede, but an estimated 40 percent of the country remains under water.
