Burma Dismisses Military Rape Allegations - 2004-09-12

Burma's military government has dismissed a rights group's allegations that Burmese soldiers continue to use rape as a weapon to intimidate ethnic minorities.

The Women's League of Burma issued a report Thursday, saying many women and girls in all Burmese ethnic states, as well as central Burma, have been raped by Burmese military personnel over the last two years. The report said most of the rapes were committed or approved by senior Burmese military officials and authorities.

In a statement released today (Friday), Burma's foreign ministry said the charges are baseless. It also accused the group of writing fabricated claims to undermine the country's military.

Burma's military government has long dismissed claims that its soldiers use rape as a weapon.
