Burma Prepares for ASEM Summit - 2004-10-06

Burma's new foreign minister arrives in Vietnam Wednesday to attend this week's Asia-Europe Meeting.

Nyan Win is leading Burma's delegation, which includes Labor Minister Tin Winn. The two also represented Burma at the recent United Nations General Assembly.

Burma's presence at the Asia-Europe Meeting nearly brought the summit to a halt. The European Union threatened to boycott the meeting if Burma attended, due to the Burmese military government's human rights record.

European nations later agreed to attend the summit, provided that Burma send a lower-level delegation to the event.
