Burma Abolishes Intelligence Body  - 2004-10-24

Burma's military government says it has abolished an umbrella organization of intelligence agencies previously headed by ousted Prime Minister Khin Nyunt.

Burma's state radio and television announced Friday that the National Intelligence Bureau law was scrapped because it no longer serves the public's interest.

The law, passed in 1983, gave military intelligence wide-ranging powers, and provided for special police and criminal departments within the bureau.

Analysts say the move is part of a crackdown on agencies and individuals perceived as supporters of the former prime minister, who was replaced by General Soe Win earlier this week.

They say Khin Nyunt had promoted limited democratic reforms in Burma, while Soe Win is believed to oppose them.
