New Burmese Prime Minister to Attend Summit in China - 2004-10-30

Burma's new prime minister will make his first overseas trip as chief of the Rangoon government on Tuesday, when he travels to an economic summit in China.

Lt. Gen. Soe Win will represent Burma at a business and investment summit China is hosting in its southern Guangxi province. Ten members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations -ASEAN -are taking part in the discussions.

Soe Win replaced a disgraced member of Burma's military leadership, Gen. Khin Nyunt, as prime minister earlier this month. Khin Nyunt, who helped draft the junta's so-called "roadmap to democracy," currently is under house arrest. The generals who have ruled Burma since 1962 said they sacked sacked Khin Nyunt because he failed to crack down on corruption.
